While Woodcreek Pediatrics Allergy & Asthma providers have traditionally seen adults in our community, at present the practice is CLOSED to new adult referrals. Thank you for your understanding.
Our Allergy & Asthma clinics are dedicated to serving the large number of children and adults who suffer from allergies and asthma. We offer comprehensive, personalized care for asthma, environmental allergies and food allergies.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a serious lung disease that affects approximately one in ten American children under age 18. With asthma, the lining of the airways of the lungs becomes swollen or inflamed. These airways are sensitive to irritants such as smoke, cold air, menthol vapors or certain viruses (there is a very long list). When the airways react to the irritant, the airway narrows, making it difficult to swallow and breathe. A recent landmark survey entitled Children and Asthma in America looked at the current state of asthma and asthma management among children in the United States. It found that a significant number of children DO NOT have their asthma under control.
Symptoms of Asthma
Asthma symptoms may come and go and can include any combination of the following:
- repeated coughing (especially at night or in the early morning, with exercise or with certain viral infections)
- wheezing (high-pitched whistling sound heard during breathing)
- your child may be reluctant to participate in vigorous play or sports activities
- difficulty breathing
Other symptoms may include:
- flared nostrils when breathing in
- difficulty speaking or speaking in short sentences while trying to breathe
- blue/gray fingernails or lips (call 911)
- retractions of the skin/muscles between the ribs or at the notch at the base of the throat when breathing in
- coughing fits that are hard to stop
Uncontrolled asthma causes activity avoidance, which leads to lower quality of life, and can contribute to obesity. When uncontrolled, asthma not only causes more missed school days (and missed work days for parents) than any other childhood illness, but it can also lead to permanent loss of lung function. However, with proper long-term management, asthma is a controllable disease, and lung function can be preserved.
